Is it my landlords job to remove mildew?

A pipe in the wall between my kitchen and bathroom wall was leaking and has left very bad mildew stains on the walls (one of those being the walls within my kitchen cabinet). Is it my job to remove the mildew stains before they get worse or is the landlord%26#039;s responsibility? I%26#039;m not planning to move anytime soon but don%26#039;t want to be penalized by losing my deposit for not fixing it.|||If your landlord was smart he would fix it,could cause structual damage in the long run,and cost him alot more to fix.Also this is a health hazard,you could get very sick from mold and mildew spores.I would say the landlords is responsible and if he doesn%26#039;t fix it call the health dept,or building inspector.|||YES IT IS UNLESS HE PAYS YOU TO HAVE IT DONE OR DO IT YOURSLEF|||Not worth worrying about. Wash it down with a mixture of 1/2 water and like amount of bleach.|||It may be mildew. Yet, it is more likely mold--maybe green mold.





You do need to report the problem if you have not already. Take pictures of the wall with the mold. The landlord/owner may want you to clean it. I would take a sample of it to the health department for testing.





If it returns once it has been cleaned and dried, there may be much more damage than what is visible.|||I would point it out to the landlord and have them repair it or at least document it so they know you didn%26#039;t intentionally do it.|||Since it could be mold which is hazardous to your health, it%26#039;s his responsibility. I hope he isn%26#039;t a dirtbag like my landlord, though. If so, you may have to go to court. Just get it checked out; if it is mold, have it removed then take it out of the rent if he refuses to reimburse you. Be sure to send him a registered letter stating your intent before sending a copy of the bill along with your reduced rent check.|||It%26#039;s the landlord%26#039;s responsibility to fix the pipe and the damage it causes.|||i guess it would depend on how things are laid out in your lease but normally its the landlords job to fix issues like this, if he doesnt contact you local tenants group and have him reported, it is his responsibility and there is nothing he can do if you request he fix it.give him a request in writing, mold and mildew can become a serious health risk so you should act quickly.|||Well I live in a housing complex, and we had mold and the housing complex paid for it to be removed. Don%26#039;t know if that gives you any indication.|||they seriously should. Because I had lived in a place that was rotting for 8 years, and i just moved out. He didnt care for it and now like the pipes are leaky, and the washer is literally sinking into the floor. That could lose his business. (EVERYTHING was rotting) but he could just leave it like that because of ur lease or contract thingy (Trust me I get all the info) P.S. If, on the other hand, the pipes leaked for weeks or months and you never informed the landlord causing the problem to get worse and worse.





Well then the landlord could probably make you pay for the fix and will probably keep your deposit.|||No, its their job to fix, repair and remove anything that does not allow you to reasonable occupancy of your apartment or home.


Mildew, if you breathe it over a long period of time can be toxic and I%26#039;ve never met any landlord or manager that doesn%26#039;t know that. Tell them you%26#039;ll report them if they don%26#039;t completely fix and remove all mildew from your place. H.U.D. is who you report to!|||I%26#039;d fix it if I were you. Do you really want to live with it until somebody else gets around to it?|||Yes, becuz you don%26#039;t own the property. Jump on them becuz that can be hazardous to your health to breath in mildew, mold, fungus, etc.
